During an outpatient venipuncture, a patient says, “I am healthy and do not have an infection. Do you still have to wear gloves?” The order and patient identifiers match, and the patient is cooperative. What is the most appropriate phlebotomy technician action?
D is correct: Standard Precautions require treating all blood and certain body fluids as potentially infectious, regardless of diagnosis. Hand hygiene before and after patient contact and glove use protect the patient and collector. A is incorrect: patient report and appearance do not remove exposure risk. B is incorrect: diagnosing infection is a provider role, but the phlebotomy technician should not delay routine Standard Precautions for diagnostic clearance. C is incorrect: gloves do not replace hand hygiene after removal.
