During an intake session, an adult client says they plan to drive to an ex-partner’s workplace tonight and “make them pay,” describes having a weapon in the car, and refuses to consider a safety plan. The client asks the counselor to promise complete secrecy. Which ethical principle should most strongly guide the counselor’s immediate response?
C is correct because imminent, serious risk shifts the ethical priority to preventing harm while using consultation, supervision, crisis procedures, and disclosure limited to what is necessary. B is important, but autonomy is limited when a client poses a serious threat. D is tempting because fidelity supports trust, but confidentiality has recognized limits for safety. A reflects fairness, but equal scheduling is not the immediate ethical issue. Client welfare anchors the decision.
